Job Description

Provide leadership and clinical direction of KANAs medical services and providers, directing a patient focused clinical care system consistent with recognized standards of medicine. Provide patient care in the inpatient and outpatient setting.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

Administrative

Work collaboratively with leadership to ensure the operation and design of KANA's medical clinic, its scope of services, facilities, supplies, and staffing are effective for patient centered, high quality care.

Participate as an integral member of the health division in the provision of medical services by collaborating with other health professionals to provide the KANA patients complete and comprehensive care.

Advise and actively participate in the development and coordination of KANA's quality improvement activities with respect to clinical services.

Provide oversight and direction to clinical staff and ensure compliance with clinical protocols, policies, and procedures.

Supervise medical students, residents, physician extenders and Community Health Aide clinical practice.

Participate in recruitment, orientation, onboarding and integration of new provider team members. Provide support in the preparation of provider contracts.

Oversee coordination of an effective performance appraisal and development program to include peer review for professional staff and the development of performance improvement plans as may be required.

Work with Purchased and Referred Care Services to prioritize medical needs of patients. Work within the PRC budget to ensure financial stability.

Represent KANA in a positive and respectful manner on various committees as assigned. Participate in meetings off-site as assigned, such as ANTHC Clinical Directors meeting and Alaska Native Health Board (ANHB) meetings.

Clinical

Perform routine general medical and specialized duties that fall within a Family Medicine Physicians technical and educational expertise for patients of KANA, in any of the clinical environments.

Remain current in improvements in the field of medicine and strive to incorporate those improvements into the program when appropriate, maintaining licensure and other credentials as required.

Follow established protocol for patient referrals within and outside the Alaska Tribal Health system.

Actively participate and embrace in KANAs continuous quality improvement activities. Monitor and share necessary information to facilitate risk prevention activities with management. Participate in peer review sessions with providers.

Continually strive to improve patient experience and quality of care by focusing on key leverage points of optimal patient access, continuity, team based care, clinical information systems, patient self-management, and community engagement.

Represent KANA in a positive and respectful manner, assisting in the promotion and maintenance of good public relations among staff, community groups, and professional organizations.

Communicate effectively with patients, colleagues, subordinates, management, and other KANA staff. Practice meaningful customer service skills addressing patient and staff needs courteously and promptly. Promote and maintain professional staff relationships.

Ensure that explanation of the medical treatment plan and treatment plan alternatives be discussed with patients in a professional manner and provide appropriate referral services when the treatment is outside the scope or ability to provide the service locally.

Promote the importance of preventive health care through the provision of patient education to all ages of KANAs service population.

Correctly document entries and maintain patient charts as outlined in the KANA Medical Clinic policies and procedures.

Accurately and promptly provide coding, billing or other financial information to KANA billing and finance staff and follow up insurance pre-authorizations as required or when requested.

Travel by small aircraft to provide itinerant medical services to the resident population within the Kodiak Island villages, at times under less than optimum conditions, often requiring transport of medical supplies.

Attend all OSHA, HIPAA, and other regulatory compliance training as directed or required.

Supervisory Responsibilities: Provide direct supervision to KANA Medical Providers (MD, DO, FNP, PA-C) and Chief Pharmacist.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation with a degree of Doctor of Medicine or Osteopathic Medicine from a U.S. medical school, or an Osteopathic Medical School listed as approved by the American Council on Graduate Medication/Education and hospitals, American Medical Association in the list published for the year of graduation, and completion of an approved internship/residency in Family Practice. Foreign medical school graduates may be considered if they have passed the FLEX Exam or equivalent and completed an approved U.S. internship or residency program.

Permanent and full or unrestricted license to practice medicine in the State of Alaska. Family Medicine Board Eligible/Board Certified. Obstetrical training/experience preferred.

Experience leading provider teams and coordinating high quality medical services in an ambulatory care setting.

Must successfully pass the Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention (ICPA) background check.

ACLS and PALS required. ALSO, NRP, and ATLS may be required for inpatient care.

Knowledge of Database, Internet, Spreadsheet and Word Processing software. Must have the computer skills needed to access and document in computerized medical records.

Ability to travel to remote communities by small plane.
